Only Eyes for You, “Queen of Sacrifice”

“Queen of Sacrifice” Upcycled Box Assemblage

He ate them all!  Back in 1975 Matt was just 2 years old when we needed to get a snack break.  I had a long list of errands and both of us were hungry.  I pulled into Herfy’s fast food restaurant and my purse only yielded enough for a small order of fries.  I figured I’d let him has his fill and take what was left over.  HA! There wasn’t even one fry left!  I willingly let him eat them all, and chalked it up to being a mother.  I remember that day like it was yesterday because it is one of those memories that makes me laugh.

I can still feel all the emotions.  I remember the protectiveness I felt: my little guy is hungry.  The frustration I felt: drat it, I left the cash on the table at home. The determination I felt:  Matt gets his fill.  I remember the “humph!  he actually ate them all?!” I thought.  And I remember the hunger I felt, but it was trumped by the sacrifice a mother makes.

I was inspired to make this “Queen of Sacrifice” with glasses so I could adhere the word “YOU” on each lens.  Sacrifice lives in a world with YOU colored glasses.  Sacrifice is #4 in the Ten Virtues for the Modern Age.

The official definition is “We’re hardwired to seek our own advantage but also have a miraculous ability, very occasionally, to forego our own satisfactions in the name of someone or something else.  We won’t ever manage to raise a family, love someone else or save the planet if we don’t keep up with the art of sacrifice.”

I shook my head when I typed “very occasionally” the person (or persons) who wrote the definition for the “Ten Virtues” obviously wasn’t a parent!

I know so many people who wear those “YOU” colored glasses!  God Bless you “Queens of Sacrifice!” you know who you are!
