Crazy Quilt Tree with Drapery Swatch Fabrics

Faux Cray Quilt Cone Tree

I was digging in the attic to get my Christmas supplies left over from last year and I ran into this custom curtain fabric swatch book that I picked up on my walk a few summers ago.  The lady just stacked a few of them on the sidewalk with a free sign!

It wasn’t fun taking the book apart because it is put together with huge staples.  I could have left it together I suppose, but it gives me satisfaction to have stuff sorted by colors or patterns.

The swatches are just gorgeous and because there was so much selection, I hardly used any of the fabrics….goody I can make more projects.

I also repurposed the cone tree.  It had been covered with felt reindeer and bows.  After removing them I used black acrylic paint to cover the whole tree so if there were any spaces between the fabric pieces it would not be so noticeable.

It was very easy to cover the cone with the fabrics.  I cut some triangles, some rectangles and some squares using hot glue to attach them.  After the tree was completely covered with fabric pieces I used Ranger Stickles glitter glue to make faux gold stitches working in one section at a time.  After one section was dry, I covered another section with the faux stitches.  That was the most time consuming part of the whole project.

I had a finial lamp part that worked perfectly for the top!  It was attached with E6000.

I finished the bottom with gold pipe cleaner and am happy with my crazy quilt cone tree.  It will be sitting in Sunrose Gallery here in Seaside, Oregon for my First Saturday featured artist show on December 1.
